The Tenets of Taekwon-Do
The word "tenet" means "rule". At the beginning of class, when we say the first student oath, we say “I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do.” This means that we are making a promise to follow the rules. These rules should be followed both inside and outside of the dojang. The way we act in our everyday lives shows everyone whether or not we have a powerful TKD spirit! If you can follow these 7 rules all of the time, you are showing the world that you have a black belt heart!
1. COURTESY: I am always kind and respectful to others.
2. INTEGRITY: I always tell the truth and do the right thing.
3. PERSEVERANCE: I always try my best and I finish the job.
4. SELF-CONTROL: I am in control of my body and my words.
5. COMMUNITY SERVICE: I help others around me without being asked. I expect nothing in return!
6. INDOMITABLE SPIRIT: I have a powerful spirit and nothing can take it away!
7. LOVE: I show love and caring to my parents, my teachers my friends and to myself!
Some of these tenets have big words and some have small words. You must try your best to remember them and to use them!
Here are some other big words to practice:
| DIVERSITY: |
Everyone is different, and that’s a good thing! |
| RESPONSIBILITY: |
I do my job without being told. No excuses! |
| EMPATHY: |
I try to understand how others are feeling. |
| RESPECT: |
I treat others the way I like to be treated. |
| PATIENCE: |
I stay calm when I have to wait for something. |
| POLITENESS: |
I use good manners with everyone all of the time. |
| COMMUNICATION: |
I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. |
